It is another season of positive apprehension for African writers  as the winner of the 2016 edition of the Etisalat Prize for Literature  will be announced on May 20, 2017.

At the event holding at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, the winner will be selected from the three shortlisted authors: Jacqui L’Ange, author of The Seed Thief; Jowhor Ile, And After Many Days and Julie Iromuanya, Mr. and Mrs. Doctor.

In addition, the winner and the two runners-up will also participate in a multi-city book tour to be sponsored by Etisalat,  thereby earning global recognition. Another big plus for the shortlisted authors is that Etisalat will purchase 1,000 copies of their books for distribution to schools, libraries and book clubs across the African continent.

The panel of judges for the 2016 prize  is chaired by multiple award-winning writer, Helon Habila,  who is currently an associate professor of creative writing at George Mason University, United States. Others are Ivorian writer and translator, Edwige-Renée Dro and Zimbabwean-born South African writer, Elinor Sisulu.

The Chief Executive Officer, Etisalat Nigeria, Matthew Willsher, said that apart from being the climax of a series of milestones that made the prize unique, the award presentation further underscored Etisalat’s unwavering commitment to the development of African literature.

“The Etisalat Prize entails a rigorous process which the winner and the two runners-up have endured. We are elated by the thoroughness of the entire process; from the call for entries, the long list, the short list and, finally, the award ceremony where the winner will be unveiled. We thank the judging panel for their fair evaluation of the entries and commitment that has resulted in the uncovering of a literary talent in fiction writing that Africa can boast of,” he stated.

As a prelude to the award presentation ceremony, Etisalat will organize a series of literary events including book reading sessions, book donations, a flash fiction training workshop, media visits and interviews aimed at connecting the three finalists with literary enthusiasts in key cities across Africa.

The Winner of the Etisalat Prize will receive £15,000, an engraved Montblanc Meisterstück pen and a high-end device. The winner will also attend the Etisalat-sponsored fellowship at the University of East Anglia under the mentorship of Giles Foden an English author best known for his novel The Last King of Scotland.

Popular Nigerian singer and songwriter, Simi has penned a beautiful letter to her daughter, Adejare as she turns 6-months-old.

November 30 marked six months since the singer and her husband, Adekunle Gold welcomed their little platter of feet. Taking to her Instagram page, Simi posted an adorable photo of her herself and her daughter along with the lovely message.

The first time mum noted that she is excited for her daughter to grow up so they can do fun stuff together.

In her words;

“My baby. My daughter. The love of my life. This feisty little chocolate princess is 6 months old today. God is so great.

You make me giddy Adejare. You changed my life and turned my Spirit inside out. Giving you life (in collaboration with God and your daddy) gave me new life, and is the most spiritual thing I ever did in all my life. You’re everything to me. I’ve never felt a love so complete and thorough and protective and jealous and unconditional. They tell you you’re gonna love your baby so much, but you don’t know how much until you love your baby.

I’m emotional because you’re growing up too fast and some days I want time to freeze, so I can soak up more of these moments, but I’m also excited for you to grow up so we can have cute, silly conversations. So we can go on mommy/daughter dates. So we can have slumber parties. So you can confide in me. So we can pray together. You’re everything I asked for, and then so much more. You complete our little family. Thank you for your gummy smiles and for all the words you think you’re saying. I hear you. I love you too much Deja. Happy half birthday

– Mommy”
