ATP Tour Finals: Wawrinka Powers Past Berdych

Stanislas Wawrinka proved too hot for Tomas Berdych in their opening round robin match at the AT World Tour Finals on Monday.

The Swiss third seed lost just two games en route to a 6-1 6-1 thrashing of the sixth seed Czech Tomas Berdych.

The Australian Open champion has struggled in the latter part of the season, going without a win from the US Open up until Paris, where he won his opener, only to lose to South Africa’s Kevin Anderson in the third round.

But back at the O2 Arena, Wawrinka was fired up losing just three of his service points to sweep the first set in 25 minutes.

He denied Berdych any chance of getting back into the Group A opening round tie, sealing just his second win over the 2011 semi-finalist this year- the other been a hard-fought semi-final cracker at the Aussies .

The win improves Wawrinka’s lead on their career head-to-head record to 9-5.
