The Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar, on Thursday stressed the need for unity among northern monarchs to enhance peace in the region in view of its current challenges.
Abubakar spoke yesterday during a visit to the new Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammad Sanusi II, to condole with the Kano emirate over the death of the former emir, Alhaji Ado Bayero, and congratulate him on his appointment.
He said relations between the Kano and Gombe emirate council go as far back as 200 years ago with respect and dignity, adding that over 80 percent of Gombe businessmen reside in Kano.
“My father didn’t usually take actions on critical issues until he had sought fatherly advice from Ado Bayero. I think the only way we can sustain such respect and understanding is by cooperating, especially now that our region is facing great challenges and uncertainties. Let us remain brothers to salvage the region from the dark period we have found ourselves”, he said.
The Gombe Emir appealed to his Kano counterpart to always include his council in their activities in view of his respect and loyalty to the Kano emir as a person and the Kano Emirate Council as an institution.
In his response, Sanusi II said the North as a block is facing huge challenges of economic backwardness, illiteracy, insurgency, killings, destruction of property and diseases. These, he said, should be confronted headlong.
