Torn Umbrella: PDP Splits As Seven Governors, Atiku, Oyinlola, Others Form New Faction

pdpThe fragile peace that was beginning to settle in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has been shattered with the breakaway from the party by at least seven out of the party’s 23 governors, who announced that they have taken over the party.

Speaking at a press briefing in the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja, the faction announced a former acting National Chairman of the PDP, Abubakar Kawu Baraje, as its new leader.

The press briefing was attended by Governors Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers State), Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso (Kano State), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto State), Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara State), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa State), Sule Lamido (Jigawa State) and Babangida Aliyu (Niger State).

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who earlier led the governors to stage a walk out from the ongoing special national convention of the PDP, was also at the press briefing.

Former Osun State Governor and National Secretary of the PDP, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola was announced as the National Secretary of the new PDP faction.

The party leaders said they took the step to salvage the PDP from those who have hijacked it.

  1. The factional PDP has no locus standi to exist as
A branch of the main registered PDP led by Bamanga Tukur. The faction is made up of dictators like Amaechi and Atiku who would want
Things done as usual by concensus. Besides, they are also nursing presidential ambition.
