Coronavirus: Iran Asks IMF For Loan — First Time Since 1962

Iran says it has asked financial assistance from the International Monetary Fund, to fight the novel coronavirus.

This would make it the first time since 1962 that the country would request assistance from the IMF.

“Our central bank requested access” to the IMF’s Rapid Financing Instrument (RFI), Iranian Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif said on Twitter.

The country recorded 1075 new coronavirus cases over the last 24 hours, as death toll hits 429.

The coronavirus has infected more than 124,500 people globally, according to the WHO. China remains the most affected with 80,000 cases, followed by Italy with 12,000, and Iran, 9,000.
