Nigerians have taken to Twitter to react to the death sentence slammed on Maryam Sanda, who was found guilty of killing her husband, Bilyamin Mohammed Bello in 2017.

Justice Yusuf Halilu of the federal high court in Abuja on Monday sentenced the defendant to death by hanging, a judgment that has sparked social media debate.

Sanda reportedly stabbed her husband, son of Haliru Mohammed Bello, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP,  to death with a bottle in November 2017.

Sanda was charged with culpable homicide in November 2017 by the police who are seeking the death penalty in the two-count charge.

According to Police, she did so with “absolute intent to kill” him.

However, she pleaded not guilty to the crime and was able to secure bail with the conditions, including an undertaking from her father to produce her in court till the end of the trial after several attempts.

However, on Monday, the court found her guilty as charged, and sentenced her to death by hanging.
