A former minister of education, Oby Ezekwesili has faulted President Muhammadu Buhari’s directive to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to stop providing foreign exchange for importation of food into the country.

According to the former vice president of the world bank, the directive shows the President is out of touch and has absolute contempt for data.

President Buhari on Tuesday, in Daura his hometown when he hosted All Progressives Congress (APC) governors to Eid-el-Kabir lunch said the foreign reserve will be used only for diversification of the economy, and not for encouraging more dependence on foreign food importations.

In the words of the president, “Don’t give a cent to anybody to import food into the country. ’’

“We have achieved food security, and for physical security, we are not doing badly,’’ he said.

Reacting further to the directive, Ezekwesili, a former presidential candidate shared the latest data from the Famine Early Warning Systems(FEWS) Network, which provides information and analysis on food insecurity around the world.

With information on food security around the world, Ezekwesili says Buhari’s conclusion and directive say a lot about his administration’s policy-making.

See what she wrote below:

A completely out-of-touch ‘leader’. He is cocooned away in the grandeur of AsoRock where they serve him delicatessen and praise-sing to him: “Ranka dede Sir, your Agriculture Policy is working wonderfully. All farmers in Nigeria are now Billionaires & exporting to the US”.

We all know that President Buhari has absolute contempt for Data but we shall go ahead and put out here some of the Knowledge he should have had before making this latest blunder of ‘Directing’ what should be an independent central bank to “not give a cent for food import”.

I will share the latest information on Nigeria from FEWS NET, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network, which provides information and analysis on food insecurity around the world.
That our President thinks we have achieved Food Security says a lot about his Policy-Making.

FEWS Net is Famine Early Warning Systems Network. It “uses an integrated approach that considers climate, agriculture production, prices, trade, nutrition, and other factors, together with an understanding of local livelihoods.”

The knowledge that helps Evidence-Based Policies.

What is Food Security, President?
I will offer the universal meaning provided by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security because that should help a Policy Maker know easily whether such is the case in Nigeria before taking a major Policy stance in Agriculture.

Food security, as defined by the United Nations’ Committee on World Food Security, means that all people, at all times, have physical, social&economic access to sufficient, safe, & nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life, she wrote.

“There have been challenges along the line – the inclement national financial weather, the COVID-19 pandemic and others not so significant. But you have weathered the storm admirably and steadied the ship of state.

“The challenges will no doubt present a new format as you step into the third year. These are heightened political participation, pressure to deliver more dividends of democracy and increased demands from the political system. I have no doubt that you will cope nicely.

“Please continue to make the welfare of the people your biggest concern. They are the reason for the state. Without them there will be no government or any political office to occupy.

“Once again, congratulations, as I wish you a resounding success in office and every aspect of life.

“My kind regards to the good wife, Alhaja Kafayat Oyetola and the entire cabinet of the State of Osun.”
