Fani Kayode Comes For Festus Keyamo Over “Buhari Doesn’t Need WAEC” Statement

Festus Keyamo(SAN), President Muhammadu Buhari’s campaign spokesperson had said on a Channels TV program on Sunday that the president doesn’t need a West African School Certificate Examination(WASCE) for his position.

It becomes extremely foolish for anybody who is not statutorily empowered to issue WAEC certificates to come and challenge the body that has the statutory power to issue certificates.

According to the lawyer, there are other qualifications that the constitution requires, of the person seeking the highest position in the country.

There are other levels of qualifications to run for the office of President. In fact, if you have occupied the public office for a reasonable length of time, by the provisions of the constitution, you do not even need a WAEC certificate to become President of Nigeria.

This statement has sparked a lot of reactions from Nigerians especially Femi Fani Kayode, a former minister for aviation. According to Fani Kayode, Buhari goofed by presenting a form which indicates that his qualification includes WAEC.

He wrote: Buhari may not need a WAEC certificate to contest but once he swore to an affidavit or presented a form indicating that his qualifications include WAEC it becomes a different matter. Or has he withdrawn his WAEC claim? This is a matter of perjury and not whether he is qualified.

  1. I listen to the interview very well. Keyamo just clarified the issue of WAEC results and it’s equivalent as a qualifications for the post of becoming president of Nigeria. He said someone could be president of Nigeria without WAEC results if the person as worked for 12yrs as a civil servant. This was his interpretation of equivalent inserted in the constitution of Nigeria as qualifications for the post of presidency in Nigeria.
