Why Buhari may not be able to go to bed happy

President Muhammadu Buhari has condemned the Saturday morning attack in Kaduna state and commiserated with victims and their families, saying no responsible leader can go to bed happy after these frequent attacks.

Reacting to the attack this morning, the president, expressed concerns at the spate of blood shedding in the state, questioning the reckless disregard for human lives.

I am deeply troubled by the fact that sanctity of life is now treated with such reckless disregard that people derive joy in shedding the blood of others or perceived enemies, he said.

He said it was impossible for a responsible leader to go to bed happy, knowing that his citizens are killed one and another.

“No responsible leader would go to bed happy to see his citizens savagely killing one another on account of ethnic and religious bigotry.”

“Violence cannot be the solution to these persistent conflicts as long as people resort to deliberate provocations, revenge and counter revenge.”

In a statement via his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Garba Shehe, Buhari restated his administration’s commitment to tackle insecurity and protect lives and properties of  Nigerians.

“If the people resist government’s efforts to hold the perpetrators and their sponsors accountable, it would be very difficult to bring the violence to a permanent end,” he said.

“Everything is politicised in Nigeria, including the efforts to bring offenders to justice, because their people will rise up in arms to resist their arrests and prosecution.”

While also describing the abysmal loss of lives in the country as “deadly poisons that have infected the human psyche on such scale that people now don’t have any moral inhibitions about taking life.”
