Zainab Ahmed: Nigeria’s new acting Minister of Finance (Some things to know about her)

Zainab Ahmed, Nigeria’s newly appointed Acting Minister of Finance assumed duty on Monday, 4 days after the resignation of Kemi Adeosun, former Finance Minister. President Muhammadu Buhari after accepting the resignation of Adeosun, appointed Ahmed to oversee the ministry of finance.

Many have blasted the president for the appointment saying he hides no opportunity to show is nepotism. They have also argued that the new acting Minister is ill fit for the position and that there are better options in the South.

Still the minister of state for budget and national planning, Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, a professional accountant was born on June 16, 1960 in Kaduna State.

Zainab graduated in 1981 from Ahmadu Bello University and did her National Youth Service, NYSC, in Kaduna State in 1981/1982. Her place of primary assignment was Messrs. Egunjobi Suleiman & Co. Chartered Accountants, as an Audit Trainee.

Ahmed obtained her master’s degree from the Ogun state University, Ago Iwoye in 2004. She got her IJMB ‘A’ Levels from SBS/ABU Zaria in 1979 and her WASC ‘O’ Level in 1977 from Queen Amina College, Kaduna.

Zainab was employed in 1982 as an Accountant in the Ministry of Finance, Kaduna State. After several promotions in the ministry, Zainab resigned in 1985 to join the Nigerian Telecommunication Ltd (NITEL).

In 2010, Zainab was appointed as the executive secretary and national coordinator of the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI).

She has also served as the managing director of the Kaduna Industrial and Finance Co. Ltd (KIFC), appointed a member of the National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG). She is a fellow of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) and a member of the Nigerian Institute of Taxation and the Nigerian Institute of Management.
