The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) National Chairman, Prince Uche Secondus has said that President Muhammadu Buhari has just celebrated his last Democracy Day as president.
In a statement issued by Ike Abonyi, his Special Adviser on media in Abuja on Tuesday, Secondus said for democracy to survive in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress must be done away with.
In the statement to mark Democracy Day, the PDP National Chairman, Nigerians are anxiously looking forward to the opportunity to dispense with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the President.
“If Democracy must survive in our country we must do away with APC and Nigerians are ready and willing to do just that because they cherish democracy as the best form of government.
“Going by their poor record of performance in the last 36 months, and the determination of Nigerians to put the country in the right footing, this is the last Democracy Day this President will mark.
“Their agenda now is to intimidate, harass and scare opponents to create a Police state with the aim of turning the country into one-party state but it must be resisted by Nigerians who passed similar road before and came out victorious.
‘’The next Democracy Day May 29, 2019, which Nigerians and indeed all lovers of democracy are anxiously looking forward to would be the smooth transition from confusion and purposeless governance to real democracy which the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is returning to gift to the Nation.”
Prince Secondus said that the democracy PDP established and nurtured for 16 years has been bastardized and grossly undermined by the intolerant and drifting APC administration in the last three years.
He, therefore, called on the international community to show more than passing interest in the events leading to Nigeria’s general election in 2019 “as the APC rigging strategy has already started through intimidation and harassment of political opponents across the country.”
Focus On Reducing Poverty, Not 2023 Elections – Peter Obi
Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has called on his fellow politicians to put issues of 2023 aside and focus on how to rescue the country from the current economic crisis.
Obi said that solving the economic problems of Nigeria was more important than political permutations geared towards the next general elections.
The former Anambra State Governor stated during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics.
He expressed that the next election has no impact on people’s current livelihoods.
Obi also blamed President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for not adequately preparing Nigerians for the impact of COVID-19, stating the monies borrowed by this government were not properly put to use.
“Every other country is discussing the recession and how to pull their people out of poverty.
“So what we should do now is to concentrate on the monetary and fiscal policies to start pulling people out of poverty,” Obi said.
Recession: Nigeria Is Broke, Can’t Afford 2021 Budget – Atiku
Former Vice-President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has expressed that the Federal Government should reconsider the 2021 budget owing to the recession.
Nigeria officially entered into its worst economic recession in 33 years after the nation recorded a GDP contraction of 3.62 percent in the third quarter of 2020.
He stated that Nigeria is broke and cannot afford the luxurious items in the N13.08 trillion budget proposal.
Atiku in a Twitter thread on Sunday stated that COVID-19 only complicated an existing economic problem.
Atiu went on to express that had President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration listened to advice, the recession could have been avoided.
“We could have avoided this fate by a disciplined and prudent management of our economy.”
“This could have been avoided had this administration taken heed to the patriotic counsel given by myself and other well-meaning Nigerians on cutting the cost of governance, saving for a rainy day, and avoiding profligate borrowing,” Atiku said.
He further said that now is not the time to trade blames but to focus on ways to manage the situation and called on Buhari’s government to “swallow its pride, and accept its limitations, so that they can open their minds to ideas, without caring who the messenger is.”
I Won’t Join Political Enemies To Shoot Down Tinubu – Fayose
Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has described Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as one of the greatest builders of men in Yoruba land and Nigeria at large.
The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said this in Ado Ekiti on Saturday while speaking with journalists as part of the events commemorating his 60th birthday.
Fayose stated that Tinubu has paid his due politically, hence he vowed not to join political enemies of the former Lagos State Governor to shoot him down.
“I am not championing the course of Tinubu, I am not in the position to do that, but there is no denying the fact that Tinubu is a prominent Yoruba leader, whether in APC or in PDP. There is no gainsaying that fact. Fayose is a prominent son of Yoruba nation. Governors Nyesom Wike, Ifeanyi Okowa, Okezie Ikpeazu, are prominent sons of southern Nigeria.
“What I am trying to say is that we can’t hide their identities and goodwill for political reasons. We can’t deny their contributions. Other leaders from the North like Ahmadu Bello Sardauna, they made different impacts not necessarily like Awolowo. So, Tinubu has paid his dues. I have paid my dues, Okowa has paid his dues, Wike has paid his dues, we need to acknowledge them.
Fayose also insisted that he won’t dump PDP despite the crisis rocking the south-west caucus of the party.
