A Brazilian man has been shot dead during a foiled robbery on a group of mothers and their young children. Elivelton Neves Moreira, 21, targeted the group outside a school in Sao Paulo, but one of them was an off-duty cop dropping off her child.

Security cameras filmed the incident which took place on Saturday morning at around 8am at Ferreira Master school where they were attending a Mothers’s Day party.

Military police officer Katia da Silva Sastre, 42, has been commended for her actions after she shot three times at Moreira who later died from his injuries in hospital.

The gunman pointed his .38 revolver at the mothers and threatened the school’s security guard, taking his wallet and phone.

Aware of a commotion, Katia pulled her police-issue gun from her bag, loads it quickly then fired three rounds, hitting Moreira in the chest and leg. He managed to fire two shots, but one missed and the other jammed in his gun.

The officer, who had gone to the event with her seven-year-old daughter, told colleagues: ‘I didn’t know if he was going to shoot the kids or the mothers or the security guard at the school door.

‘I just thought about defending the mums, the children, my own life and my daughter’s.’

But one of the mums was an off duty military police officer and she shot him (Picture: Governo do Estado de Sao Paulo/Facebook)

The mum of two, who has served as cop for 20 years, added: ‘I had to act quickly to end his aggression and prevent him from harming anyone. I reverted to the training I have received in the corporation.

‘It’s gratifying to have been in the right place to have saved all our lives,’ she added revealing she was first warned of the danger when a woman, in a grey dress, hurriedly walked past and pointed backwards saying a robbery had just taken place behind her.

Her husband, military police lieutenant André Alves said to Folha de Sao Paulo: ‘The suspect’s gun fired once, but it is not known whether or not it was before Katia fired.

‘The first shot ricocheted and got lost. On his second attempt at firing, the weapon locked. Thankfully she was faster than him, because when a thug discovers (their opponent) is a police officer, he shoots to kill.’

The policewoman was commended for her bravery in a ceremony as Brazil celebrated Mother’s Day on Sunday. Paying tribute to the officer at the police station where she works and handing her some flowers, Sao Paulo Governor, Márcio França, said she had shown ‘dexterity, technique and courage.’

He explained the ‘homage was made because it’s Mother’s Day and because she is a mum.

‘She went to the party to celebrate the date and a situation like this happened. She acted so precisely, so perfectly, that we decided to honour her,” the governor told Folha.

Public security secretary, Maggie Alves said: “She pushed the children out of the way and approached the thief. She shoots, the boy shoots, the boy tries to shoot at her leg. She immobilizes the boy and calls the (emergency services). It was a perfect procedure from a technical point of view.’

However, governor França lamented the outcome as ‘sad and regrettable’.

‘It is not ideal that the suspect died. We would have preferred this had not happened. But it is a warning to those who take up a gun that they could be killed because our security professionals are well trained to protect the public,’ he said.

Bauchi State Government has revealed that the mysterious deaths recorded in the State has been as a result of illegal abortions.

An investigation carried out by the Bauchi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency has revealed that illegal abortion by unqualified medical practitioners is the cause of mysterious deaths in Azare and other local government areas in the northern part of the state.

According to reports, no fewer than 200 women have died in Bauchi as a result of this and there are projections that the number could be more at the end of the investigation.

Mohammed said the deaths resulted from unwanted and unplanned pregnancies by both married and unmarried women of childbearing ages who, after becoming pregnant, visited quack health workers to terminate the pregnancies.

He said the lack of understanding of the importance of child spacing as well as ignorance of what to do with such pregnancies had become a major problem to family health in the state.

He emphasized the need for adequate sex education for the girl-child by parents, particularly mothers, to reduce unwanted pregnancies, thereby reducing deaths from complications.
