Five persons confirmed dead in Onitsha accident

Five persons were confirmed dead in a multiple accident in Onitsha, Anambra State, the accident involved an articulated vehicle, a tipper, a commercial bus owned by Onitsha South Mass Transport Company and a car.

An eyewitness told the News Agency of Nigeria that the accident occurred at about 6.00 a.m. on Sunday near Ziks Roundabout, along the Onitsha – Enugu Expressway, Onitsha.

The source said the unmarked articulated vehicle allegedly drove into the expressway carelessly and ran into the oncoming tipper and other vehicles.

According to the source, the tipper lost control and hit the commercial bus and other vehicles on the road while trying to dodge the articulated vehicle.

The source said five persons died on the spot while many others sustained serious injuries.

“Personnel of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and that of Willie Work Force (WWF) were those who later took the dead and wounded to hospital,” the source added.

NAN reports that the affected vehicles, which caused obstruction on the expressway were towed away by the FRSC.

When contacted, the state FRSC Sector Commander, Sunday Ajayi, said efforts to get the detail from his officials proved abortive.

“I just want to advise road users to exercise extreme caution as they ply the roads and to ensure that their vehicles are in good shape before setting out on any journey,” Mr. Ajayi said.

NAN further gathered that a similar accident involving three vehicles also occurred by New Tyre Market along the Onitsha – Awka expressway on Saturday afternoon.

Sources also said the accident allegedly left two persons in a commercial bus dead on the spot while many sustained injuries.

Amidst the continued violence across the country, Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi has approved the extension of the 24-hour curfew in Ekiti State indefinitely.

The curfew was declared on Tuesday evening following reported cases of violence in Ado Ekiti as hoodlums allegedly the peaceful protest by EndSARS protesters.

The initial curfew lapsed on Wednesday night by 10 pm.

However, on Thursday morning, the Commissioner for Information, Mr. Akin Omole, announced that the curfew still continues in every part of the state until further notice.

It reads: “The general public is hereby alerted that the 24-hour curfew announced by the State Government is still in place in all parts of the state until further notice.

“Government appreciates the cooperation of all citizens of the state in obeying the curfew and ensuring that peace returns to the state.”

According to reports, no less than 58 inmates of the National Correctional Service Centre located in Okitipupa, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area of Ondo State have been released by hoodlums on Thursday.

It was gathered the hoodlums stormed the center, burnt down a vehicle, and forcefully released the inmates.

It was also gathered that several items were also destroyed on the premises of the prison service.

This is the second jailbreak to be recorded this week, following the jailbreak recorded in Benin, Edo State earlier in the week.

An attempted jailbreak has reportedly occurred at the Ikoyi Prisons of the Nigeria Correctional Service located in Lagos State.

Videos circulating on social media suggest the Ikoyi prison has been broken into, some building set on fire, and gunshots are been heard as officials try to control the pandemonium.

A video clip of the jailbreak shows smoke coming from the prison premises while gunshots were heard in the background.

According to reports gathered the police and military personnel had been deployed to assist prison guards to foil the attempt by inmates to escape.
