Thugs Invade PDP Congress Venue With Stones

Some Peoples Democratic Party chieftains in Oyo, South-western part of Nigeria appear to have fallen out of favour with their people following a recent embarrassing incident.
 
Former Speakers, Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon. Kehinde Ayoola and Hon. Moruff Atilola, a former council chairman, Hon. Fatai Obabi and other Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwarts in Oyo West Local Government were on Saturday pelted with stones by suspected hired thugs who on a mission to prevent the conduct of the local government congress.
DAILY POST gathered on Sunday that trouble started when the thugs stormed the Bola Sanga venue of ‎PDP congress to prevent leaders of the party.
The incident made party members run for cover at the Oyo West LGA Divisional Police headquarters, Ojongbodu. A source however informed a reporter that one person identified as Idowu Mechanic was killed during the fracas.
The deceased, who was seated at a function in Ile Gbenku area of Apinni with other guests, was allegedly stabbed for refusing to give the thugs money.
His remains has been reportedly deposited at a mortuary in of one of the hospitals in the ancient town. An eyewitness revealed that ‎the thugs, on getting to Apinni area of Oyo East, attacked any one in sight. The deceased got killed in the process.
It was learnt that the thugs were still on rampage last night just as sympathisers besieged a health facility at Araromi area of the town to view the corpse.
But the DPO for the LGA at Ojongbodu later led the stalwarts of the party back to the venue where Prince Akeem Olukitibi emerged chairman of the party.
The leaders later agreed to share the remaining positions on consensus arrangement. Ayoola while confirming that some suspected thugs invaded the venue in a bid to prevent the congress, however, denied the reported case of loss of life during the congress.
He informed a reporter in a telephone conversation that nobody was killed during the congress. He said “Nobody was killed, please check your facts, go to town and confirm.
 
“Some thugs came to the venue to prevent the leaders. I was part of the committee, though they throw stones in our direction, we later conducted the congress.
 
“We reported the incident at Ojongbodu. The DPO in charge of Oyo West at Ojongbodu led us to the venue and they ran away. We had the congress and nobody was killed.
 
“I was there, Yes, Alhaji Fatai Obabi, Hon. Mofuff Atilola were there. Alhaji Fatai Obabi was there as the Chairman of the PDP caretaker committee for Oyo West, Hon. Atilola was there as a former Speaker.
 
“I was there, though I am not from Oyo West, I am from Oyo East as an observer and monitor the congress, I can tell you, if you have there numbers call them, I can tell you that nobody was killed in Oyo West”.
Adekunle Ajisebutu, Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command in a telephone conversation with a reporter said he was not aware of the incident.
He said “I am not aware of that”.
