A suspect in connection with the killing of a policeman, Sergeant Eneojo Paul, by armed robbers who invaded Romantic Bakery in Lafia East and stole N2.5m last Friday has been arrested by the Nasarawa State police command.
Confirming the arrest to Northern City News in an exclusive interview on Tuesday in Lafia, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Idirisu Kennedy, said the suspect was arrested through the SIM card of a mobile phone said to have been stolen from the scene of the crime.
He explained that investigation was ongoing to recover the two rifles taken away by the hoodlums.
Kennedy said, “There is progress in respect of our investigation. We were able to arrest a suspect in connection with the robbery that happened on Friday last week.
“The state Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Lafia is currently interrogating the suspect to obtain useful information that could lead to the arrest of other accomplices who are on the run.
“A SIM card on a phone that was stolen from their first victim which was thrown away was what the Special Anti-Robbery Squad used in tracking the suspect.”
Kennedy explained that efforts were ongoing to also recover the handset belonging to the slain policeman, adding that arrangements were in top gear to give him a befitting burial.
The command further disclosed that all Paul’s entitlements and benefits would soon be paid to his next-of-kin as soon as the necessary processes were concluded.
The spokesman appealed to residents to provide useful information that could lead to the arrest of the fleeing bandits.
