A lawyer has allegedly assaulted an officer of the Vehicle Inspection Office, Sunday Saibor, for attempting to book a taxi driver who refused to stop when flagged down for checks.

The incident, which occurred around Shoprite shopping plaza, Jabi, Abuja on Tuesday, led to the arrest of the lawyer whose identity could not be immediately ascertained.

The lawyer, who was dressed in a black jacket and white bib, appeared to have just come out of the court before the incident.

There was, however, a mild drama when the cab driver lied on the ground and refused to follow the investigating policeman to the station.

The incident attracted motorists and other passers-by who pleaded with the policeman to allow the aged driver to go, but the officer was adamant.

He insisted on taking the driver to the station to write a statement as a witness to the scuffle between the lawyer and the VIO officer.

Saibor, whose uniform was torn during the scuffle with the lawyer, explained that he had directed the cab driver to park, but instead of stopping, he attempted to run away.

He said, “so, I entered the cab and he continued driving away, but the lawyer, who was the only passenger in the cab, directed him to park so they can beat me up. The driver parked his cab and the lawyer beat me up and tore my uniform.

“I begged him not to beat me because I am diabetic, but he kept hitting me until my colleagues came and held him. We called the police and he was arrested and taken to the Utako police station.”

The FCT police spokesman, Manzah Anjuguri, said the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Utako police station was out of the station and had not been briefed by the officer in charge of the case.
