Wedding ceremonies are definitely something to look forward to at every point in time.
In the world of sports, , 2017 has been a successful year in this regard.
A number of footballers recently tied the knots with their sweethearts at different times this past 6 months and it has indeed been beautiful.
Below are both Nigerian and foreign footballers who married their girlfriends within the first half of the year.
1. Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi married his childhood sweetheart in a civil ceremony at a luxury hotel in the heart of Rosario, Argentina in June.
A host of footballing greats past and present strutted their stuff on the red carpet, to celebrate the marriage of Barcelona superstar Messi to the mother of his two children.
2. Ahmed Musa
The Nigerian footballer who plays for Premier League club Leicester City tied the knot with his second wife, Juliet on Tuesday 23rd May in a court wedding in Abuja.
3. Antoine Greizzmann
The Atletico Madrid forward married his girlfriend Erika, a Spanish beauty in a secret wedding that took place this June. Griezmann and his wife have one child together, daughter Mia, who was born in April last year.
4. Victor Moses
Chelsea and Super Eagles star, Victor Moses today got married to his long time partner in London in May. The wedding came a week after winning the Premier League with Chelsea and a day after receiving a red card in Chelsea’s FA Cup final 2-1 loss to Arsenal.
5. Alvaro Morata
Manchester United target, Alvaro Morata wedded stunning model, Alice Campello in glitzy Venice bash. The 24-year old Real Madrid midfielder was supported by teammates, defender Dani Carvajal and midfielder Isco during the wedding ceremony.
6. Elderson Echiejile
Super Eagles and Monaco defender Elderson Echiejile got married to Oghenevwemo Ziregbe in a wedding ceremony in France last month, May 27th. The wedding was graced by former Nigerian players Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Onyekachi Apam and Vincent Enyeama.
7. Robert Firmino
The latest of them all is Liverpool star, Firminho who walked down the aisle on Tuesday with his long-term girlfriend, Larissa Pereira. The wedding took place in Maceio, the Red striker’s hometown, where the couples who have been an item since 2013 tied the knot at a lavish ceremony.
8. Manuel Neuer
The Germany goalkeeper became a married man as he and his wife Nina Weiss completed their nuptials in June 2017.
The happy couple tied the knot in the picturesque Adriatic town of Monopoli – which is in the province of Bari, Italy.
9. Phil Jones
The Manchester United players were again in a celebratory mood as they attended the star-studded wedding of defender Phil Jones and wife Kaya Hall in Nether Alderley, Cheshire, on Friday June 16, 2017.
10. Chris Smalling
The 27-year old English professional footballer tied the knot with Sam Cooke in a perfect ceremony on Lake Como on June 21, 2017.
11. Mateo Kovacic
The Croatian midfielder tied the knot in the Croatian village of Sesvetski, where he met and fell in love with Izabel Andrijanic.
The couple, both 23, exchanged their vows in St Antunas Church and continued their wedding celebrations at the Westin Hotel in the Croatian capital city of Zagreb.
‘We Will Never Forget Lekki Massacre’ – Rapper M.I. Abaga
Nigerian rapper, Jude Abaga, popularly known as MI, has reacted to the massacre that took place at the #EndSARS protest ground at Lekki Tollgate. The rapper and entertainment entrepreneur took to his Twitter page to condemn the killing and state that the night will not be erased from history.
In his words:
“WE WILL NEVER FORGET THE NIGHT OUR GOVERNMENT KILLED US FOR ASKING THEM NOT TO KILL US #LekkiMassacre #EndSARS #CrimesAgainstHumanity”

Lekki Massacre Totally Unacceptable: Comedian Alibaba
Nigerian comedian, Alibaba, has reacted to the shooting of unarmed protesters at Lekki Tollgate by military officers on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.
The veteran comedian cum actor and events compere took to his Instagram page to condemn the incident. Part of his post reads:
“The biggest mistake any democratically elected government can make, is to hand over its control to the military. Because in doing that, you have undermined the constitution, you have canceled the purpose of the National Assembly, made nonsense of the Supreme Court and confirmed that the Presidency cannot manage the country’s affairs.

By sending soldiers to the street, government is clearly, Planting that idea, without knowing it, that the ultimate leadership is in the hands of the soldiers.”

‘Our Ultimate Goal Is Not To Destroy Our Country’ – Actress Damilola Adegbite
Nigerian actress, Damilola Adegbite, has stated that the goal of Nigerian protesters has never been to destroy the country. The movie star took to her Instagram page to post a black post with a caption that reads:
“Nobody saw this coming. Nobody. Maybe only people who had inside information. This extreme approach was not expected! The youths of Nigeria only asked for assurances! Moving forward, we need damage control. We need to calm the tension. Please.
Lets use our platforms to calm this storm. Our ultimate goal is to make our country better, not to destroy it. Lives are being lost. This is not the goal. Please stay alive, for your friends and your family who love and need you! This is too much.”
