Police arrests driver for failing to report accident

A 26-year-old driver, identified as Adesokan Ademola, was arraigned in a Gudu Upper Area Court, Abuja, for allegedly causing death through dangerous driving and failure to report accident to the Police.

Ademola was docked on charges bordering on failure to report accident to the police, causing death, injury and damages through dangerous driving.‎

The prosecutor, Fidelix Ogbobe, told the court ‎that the defendant drove a man diesel truck loaded with inverter batteries, along Kugbo, Nyanya Expressway, Abuja on June 20.

He said when the defendant approached Karu bridge, he knocked down a motor cyclist, Ezekiel Odo‎ to death, and destroyed the motorcycle due to dangerous driving.

He added that the defendant also damaged one Volkswagen Golf car, owned by one Godfrey ‎Oyibo of Suleja, Niger.
Ogbobe said Oyibo and other victims sustained serious injuries, and were rushed to Asokoro General Hospital, Abuja for treatment.

According to him, the defendant fled without reporting the accident to the police, until he was arrested on June 24.

He said the offences contravened Sections 5 CAP 135 of the Federal Highway Act, Section 1A, 23 (D) and 126 of Road Traffic Act ‎. The defendant pleaded not guilty.

The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500, 000 with one surety in like sum.
He adjourned the case until Aug. 11 for hearing.
