Expired Wines worth N500,000 has been seized by the National Agency for Food Drugs Administration and Control in Cross River State has seized from shops in Calabar.

This was disclosed by the Head of NAFDAC in the state, Mr. Isaac Kolawole, who disclosed this on Tuesday to Southern City News, said the wines were seized in Calabar in March.

He said the agency made use of specialised machines and collaborated with other relevant agencies to detect the fake wines.

He said the operation followed petitions received from consumers that some of the wines they consumed were not genuine.

Kolawole said, “Three weeks ago, we carried out a joint surveillance, using specialised machine that taste if wines are original or not. We went to some shops and the products we seized amount to over N500,000. Investigation is still ongoing to ascertain the route of this product.

“Our investigation will tell us whether the seller or the producer will be liable for prosecution or to pay penalty for selling fake wines. We will sustain this surveillance because we have discovered that they are a lot of fake wines in Cross River.

“The fake wine sellers were arrested by the police and later granted bail. Investigation is still ongoing and we will certainly get to the producers.”

Similarly, Kolawole said the agency shut down 10 sachet water producing companies in the state for failing to renew their licences.
