IGP Warns Personnel On Unlawful Detention Of Suspects

The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Ibrahim Idris has warned personnel of the force against unlawful arrest and detention of innocent citizens. He lamented the spate of criminal operations organised by gangsters in custody.

Idris also disclosed that 18 members of a gang of wanted criminals in Benue State – Terzugwe Akwaza have been arrested and are in detention. The IGP gave the warning yesterday in Abuja at the monthly meeting with zonal commanders and Commissioners of Police (CPs). He said the situation is embarrassing as it questions the professional competence of the police as an institution.

Idris commended the IGP Intelligence Response Team led by Abba Kyari, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) for ensuring kidnap suspects are prosecuted. “The police is collaborating with other security agencies, this is seen in operations jointly carried out.”

The IGP said he was shocked at the cache of arms recovered from Gana, the kidnap suspect who was declared wanted last year for series of murders in Katsina Ala, Benue State.
He said the military and operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have been engaged to assist in arresting other members of Gana’s gang.
