The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police in charge of South-West zone, Foluso Adebanjo has urged police officers and security agents to avoid unnecessary coercion and intimidation in the discharge of their duties to the citizens.

Adebanjo who commended the security apparatus in Lagos State, said this yesterday at Alausa during a courtesy visit to Governor Akinwumi Ambode. He noted that the police loyalty was to the people and as such they should not be treated in an unruly manner.

His words: “As Police officers, our duty is to serve and protect the people who are actually our bosses. It is from their taxes that we are paid and so we must show respect and restraint and we can do our job without being harsh on the people. Nigerians are not criminals. Criminals will be dealt with when they commit any crime and we can do our work with a human face.”

Adebanjo, who is also in charge of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) at the force headquarters, revealed that the meeting with Ambode was part of his engagement with strategic stakeholders to enhance security, saying that it was important for all stakeholders to partner on improved security of the state.

He said he embarked on the visit on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Ibrahim Idris who directed that all DIGs should go to their respective zones to assess the crime situation and proffer solutions.

He advised criminals to stay away from Lagos and the South West as there would be no room for them to operate. Meanwhile, the Nigeria Police Command has approved two new area commands in Plateau State to be sited in Bukuru, Jos South and Pankshin in Pankshin local government councils of the state.

The Deputy Inspector–General of Police in charge of Finance and Administration, Shaibu Gambo disclosed this when he paid a courtesy visit on Governor Simon Lalong at the Government House, Rayfield, Jos to beef up security in the areas.

The two new area commands in addition to the existing ones in Jos Metropolis and Langtang North bring to four the number of Police Area Commands in the state.
