Anxiety In Edo Community Over Reported Killings In State Varsity

There was anxiety in Ekpoma, Edo State over claims by the state police that no fewer than 16 students of the Ambrose Alli University who are suspected cultists were beheaded by rival cult groups in recent clashes.

The anxiety is also more worrisome as the police also claimed that some lecturers of the university have been discovered to be cult members and that arms were even recovered from some of them.

But the school authority in a statement yesterday denied the allegations and demanded a retraction within 24 hours saying that the police was out to cause unnecessary tension in the university.

Commissioner of Police in the state, Haliru Gwandu had on Tuesday evening at a press briefing said the killings in the university were discovered during recent police raids of some hot spots in Ekpoma.

He disclosed that 16 students of the university have so far lost their lives to cult related activities adding that 17 suspected cultists were with assorted arms and stressed that 16 students were beheaded on March 17, in a cult war at the institution.

Besides, he said that some senior lecturers at the AAU who were aiding and abetting cult activities would not go free as the long hand of the law would meet them with stiff punishment.

He said some suspected kidnappers, armed robbers and cultists have been arrested by the state command stating that the police will continue its zero tolerance for crime in the state.
