‘Why Nigerian Varsities Rank Low Globally’

The Vice Chancellor of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), Prof. Abdalla Uba Adamu yesterday said the low level of internet penetration in the Nigerian University system was responsible for their poor ranking among institutions of higher learning in the world.

He made the assertion at the 53rd Meeting of the Committee of Deans of Postgraduate Studies (CDPGS) of Nigerian Universities at the University of Abuja, saying the only way they could compete with their counterparts was by being active on the internet through robust websites.

The Chairman of the CDPGS, Prof. Sanni Bamidele noted that the organization, which had its inaugural ceremony on March 27, 1987 at the University of Ibadan under Prof. Remi Kuku, currently has over 100 members across the Nigerian university system.

Adamu used the occasion which coincided with the 30th anniversary of the CDPGS to bemoan the huge gap between industry and the academia and called for a bridging of such gap.

He cited the University of Ilorin as perhaps the only institution in the country that has made a huge impact in the global university ranking and stressed the need for other universities to take a cue from Ilorin because of their visibility on the internet.
