Uproar At LASUTH Over N30,000 Levy For Two Retiring Nurses

Nurses at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH, have raised alarm over the N30,000 levy imposed on members ahead of the forthcoming send off for two retiring senior nurses.

The said senior nurses are due for retirement later in the year.

Aggrieved nurses, who spoke on condition of anonymity with Vanguard, contended that the N30,000 imposed on over 700 nurses in the hospital in this era of economic recession, was uncalled for.

According to them, aside the N30,000, nurses were still expected to pay N10,000 for the end of year Nurses Week.

A source said: “The Head of Nursing Department of LASUTH and her Second-in-Command are retiring in May and October, respectively, and as Assistant Director of Nursing Services, ADNS, level 15 officers in Lagos State Public Service.

“In preparation for their send off party, a committee was set up which approached the retiring officers to make a choice between house and car, and they picked new cars.

“During the usual New Year general meeting of all Nurses in the hospital, the committee informed the assembly of nurses that they have decided to levy each of over 700 Nurses in the hospital N30,000 to buy brand new Toyota cars for each of retiring ADNS.

“If you multiplied the amount we are to pay with the number of nurses, it will come to over N20 million. Aside this, we are still going to pay N10,000 for the end of year Nurses Week.

“These payments do not eliminate the departmental send off gifts that will be given to all other retiring nurses this year. In this time of economic recession, a poor nurse will be forced to cough out this huge sum; I think it is bad.”
