Sydney FC goalkeeper Danny Vukovic showed his soft side on Wednesday after he carried an injured seagull to safety during Australia’s FFA Cup final.
Minutes after a header from former Everton man Tim Cahill gave Melbourne City a 1-0 lead in the second half, Sydney defender Sebastian Ryall‘s clearing pass struck the bird from short range.
There was a moment of confusion as play continued but with the whistle blown, Vukovic signalled to the referee that the bird was unwell.
He went on to carefully pick up the felled bird in his gloves and carried it over to the sideline attendants, giving it a couple of get-well pets before running back onto the ground.
This made him earn a rapturous applause from the spectators.
The game was played at AAMI Park, Melbourne. It ended 1-0.
