Senate Confirms Two Supreme Court Justices

The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the nomination of Justice Eko Ejembi (Benue/North-Central) and Justice Amina Augie (Kebbi/North-West) as Justices of the Supreme Court.

The two nominees, who were previously Justices of the Court of Appeal, were approved on Tuesday after President Muhammadu Buhari asked the Senate to confirm their nomination, and are expected to be inaugurated into the members of the Bench at the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Their confirmation was conducted through an electronic voting system in which a total of 38 Senators voted in support of Justice Eko while only 1 Senator voted against; while for the case of Justice Amina, a total of 39 votes were recorded, while one vote was invalid.

The Senate, before the confirmation process, received the report of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters through its Chairman, Senator David Umaru.

The committee had screened the two nominees and found them qualified.

After the confirmation, the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, congratulated the new Supreme Court Judges and charged them to be above board in the discharge of their duties.
