The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), is conducting an investigation on how money from the ecological fund was utilised by state governments during the past administration.
The investigation first begun with FBI agents before EFCC took over, according to Thisday.
Prior to the investigation, there was information that the states which benefited from the funds did not use the money for its intended purposes.
President Muhammadu Buhari at a recent meeting with the 36 state governors realised that the fund hadn’t be put to use properly when some of the governors, especially those from the south-east, pleaded with him to release money from the fund in order to enable them tackle the ecological problems some communities in their respective states face.
The ecological fund, which receives 2 per cent of the Federation Account, is meant to be used to tackle ecological problems ravaging communities across the country. The problems include soil erosion, flood, drought, desertification, oil spillage, pollution, crop pest, landslide, and tremors.
