The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) which had recently blamed substandard products as a cause for the country’s recession has said that 90 percent of such products come from the nation’s seaports, as against speculated border routes.

The Acting Director General of SON, Dr Paul Angya, made this known in Lagos state.

Angya said contrary to speculation that the influx of unwholesome products into the country, has been as a result of porous borders, he said he was shocked to learn that the highest percent of such products come from the nation’s seaports.

Angya, who urged perpetrators of such dastardly act to desist from such acts, said anybody caught in the act would face the wrath of the law.

Disclosing that importers of such products have been blackmailing and intimidating him over his fight against such products, he noted that no amount of intimidation would cow him down, saying human lives are lost on daily basis as a result of unwholesome goods.

The SON boss described substandard goods as fast killers and that several Nigerians had died due to dubious interests of less than one percent of Nigerians.

He lamented that some importers bring goods into the country without SONCAP, a mandatory Customs clearance document, saying the absence of the agency at the seaports has been causing the influx of substandard products into the country.
