Troops on operation Layifa Dole in Borno State have arrested four fleeing Boko Haram members discovered to be planting bombs on troops supply route, the Nigerian Army said on Friday.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Sani Usman, the Nigerian Army said the arrest was possible following credible information provided by a detained suspected Boko Haram militant, Lawan Abbai.
Mr. Usman, a colonel, added that the troops carried out Mine and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) clearance at Gombori, which was along the troops main supply route and recovered two heavy IEDs buried in the ground by suspected remnants of Boko Haram insurgents.
He said in the process of recovering the deadly IEDs, the troops intercepted four fleeing suspected Boko Haram insurgents, who claimed to be on their way to surrender to troops.
He said on preliminary investigation, they were identified as confirmed Boko Haram members planting IEDs along troops’ routes by their arrested colleague, Abbai.
Meanwhile, Col. Usman said the troops rescued five women and a baby from Boko Haram insurgents in the same general area.
