Flood Alert: Bayelsa Govt Commences Drainage Clearing

The Bayelsa State Government have stepped up activities of clearing major drainage and canals in Yenagoa and its environs as well as destroying illegal structures along the canal right of way.

The pro-active move follows the flood alert warning issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMET, listing Bayelsa as one the eleven states likely to be affected by the impending flood.

It would be recalled that, Bayelsa which is predominantly a riverine area was worst hit in the 2012 flood that affected many states in the country—with the major east-west road inaccessible due to flooding.

According to the reports, heavy duty equipment was sighted on Tuesday at the Azikoro suburb of Yenagoa, clearing the blocked canal that have been converted to refuse dumping ground by residents.

The government however, warned residents to desist from dumping refuses to canals so as to avoid the repeat of the 2012 flood and help the committee set up by the government to clear blocked drainage in Yenagoa metropolis.
