Buhari’s Economic Team Brainstorms With Experts On Way Out Of Recession

Buhari-Osinbajo-UdomaThe Economic Management Team (EMT) of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration on Tuesday held what it called a consultative forum with a team of renowned economic and financial experts across the country.

The meeting was aimed at creating a platform for the EMT, comprising strictly of government officials, to interface with experts on how best to tackle the recession in the country.

At the meeting presided over by Chairman of the EMT and Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, suggestions on how best to reflate the economy, bring it out of recession and promptly restore growth were part of the agenda.

According to a statement by Mr. Osinbajo’s spokesman, Mr. Laolu Akande, the vice-president was said to have at the closed door session, expressed President Buhari’s determination to continuously consider and adopt policies that would boost businesses, increase employment and provide succour to the poor and disadvantaged.

“We will continue to engage with experts and other stakeholders so we can measure the progress of the economic policies that have been put in place.

“The challenges are many but the opportunities are much greater.

“We are clearly on the path to building an economy that will create jobs and ensure inclusive growth”, Osinbajo was quoted as saying at the meeting.

Experts, who attended the four-hour special meeting, were Mr. Bismarck Rewane, Mr. Bode Augusto, Prof. Akpan Ekpo, Dr. Ayo Teriba and Prof. Badayi Sani.

Issues on the top burner at the meeting were said to have included the review of the new foreign exchange regime and its effect on the economy as well as the draft Medium Term Economic Framework for 2017-2019.

According to the statement, the EMT and the experts made suggestions on how to reflate the economy, especially through massive infrastructural spending with active private sector participation, ensure pro-people economic policies, increase the supply of dollars to the forex market among other issues.

Also speaking with reporters at the end of the meeting, Minister for Budget and National Planning, Senator Udo Udoma said, “We have just finished a special meeting of the economic management team, as you know, we are in the middle of consultations to develop the new mid-term economic framework, M-TEF.

“The meeting is part of a comprehensive consultation process that we are embarking on to make sure that we reach out to a wide spectrum of Nigerians to get a feedback in terms of how best to make sure that we come out of this recession”.

Recall that President Buhari administration has constantly reiterated plans to lift 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.

However, the last few days have seen Nigerians discover warehouses where COVID-19 palliatives are stored by state governments which have led to the raiding of the warehouses by Nigerians.

Reacting to the development, the former lawmaker described the move to be the consequence of Nigerians being tired of having to wait for 10 years to be lifted out of poverty.

Nigerians have expressed their distaste for the tweet posted by Festus Keyamo over the #EndSARS protests that has led to lives and property being destroyed by hoodlums.

The Minister of State, Labour & Employment took to his Twitter page on Friday morning to post a tweet that reads thus:

“This morning, I woke up and remembered the African proverb: WHAT AN OLD MAN CAN SEE SITTING DOWN, A YOUNG MAN CAN’T SEE EVEN IF HE CLIMBS THE HIGHEST IROKO TREE. Good morning, Lagos. Good morning, Nigeria.”

A Twitter user identified as Adesina Oluwafemi berates the SAN for being a part of bad governance. “Mr. Keyamo. I am astonished at your statement. I am equally as old as you are if not older and I feel the pain of this our youth. I even have classmates that I can’t boast of. All these is because of bad governance which u are a part of“, he wrote.

Nigerians have reacted to the video of Nigeria’s defence spokesman, John Eneche, saying that the videos of the Lekki Tollgate shooting were photoshopped. In the video, he said it was analysed and the analyst concluded that they were all doctored.

His statement has generated reactions from Nigerians. Taking to Twitter, many Nigerian users on the micro-blogging platform have dismissed his statement as false because it is impossible to photoshop a live video on Instagram.

Information Nigeria recalls DJ Switch was hailed by Nigerians for her bravery as she waited at the scene of the incident to give everyone a live footage via her Instagram page.
