Presidency Apologises To Senate Over AGF Representative’s Remark

Published

on

Ita EnangThe Presidency has apologised to the Senate over the comment of the Representative of the Attorney General of the Federation at a meeting with the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.

Sen. Ita Enang, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Legislative Matters (Senate), tendered the apology while fielding questions from journalists in Abuja on Friday.

Enang said that it was wrong for the Attorney General’s representative Mr Okoi Obono-Obla to have said that the Senate had no right to have invited the attorney General, Abubakar Malami.

“I heard the statements after and I want to apologise to the Distinguished Senate, to the Committee on Judiciary and to the distinguished senators.

“That statement ought not to have been made: the Attorney General is Attorney General of the Federation, appointed by Mr President, cleared by the Senate and responsible for the federation.

“We are going into this matter, we will handle this matter but I first have to tender my unreserved apology for the impression it may have created to the distinguished Senate, senators and the committee members”.

It would be recalled that the Senate had on Tuesday summoned Malami to appear before its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters to explain why he charged to court Senate President Bukola Saraki and Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu for alleged forgery.

The AGF was represented by the Special Assistant to the President on Prosecution attached to the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Okoi Obono-Obla.

However, Malami, who did not honour the invitation, said the Senate committee lacked the power to summon him, Obono-Obla said.

The committee then walked Obono-Obla out of the chamber saying; “Our invitation is for the AGF and not you. So, we cannot listen to you. We will report back to the plenary for us to take decision on this”.

Obono-Obla, who spoke to journalists while leaving the Senate chamber, said the alleged forgery suit against Saraki and Ekweremadu, is not an internal affair of the senate.

Obla in his interview said that “the senate had no right to invite the AGF” and that “the AGF was not answerable to the Senate”.

However, the SSA to President Buhari reiterated the apology to the Senate adding that the Attorney General was unavoidably absent.

“The Attorney General spoke with me yesterday on the matter in the morning that he is on official assignment on behalf of the country.

“When he is in, we will make arrangement for him to respond appropriately: we want to apologise pending when he is back to respond appropriately”, he said. (NAN)

The house is indeed competent to summon the AGF, but is not competent to require him to make any remarks on a matter pending before a court, much less to place evidence relating to that matter, as indeed but ignorantly demanded by the house.

In his letter, Senator Abbo explained that his decision to defect to the APC is because of the mismanagement of the PDP in Adamawa state by Governor Umaru Fintiri.

Senator Abbo who is a first-term lawmaker was elected in 2019 to the Senate on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Meanwhile, the name Senator Elisha Abbo became popular amongst Nigerians last year after he made headlines for slapping an attendant in a sex toy shop for ‘disrespecting’ him.

2023 Presidency: Bode George Cautions Buhari About Tinubu

Bode George, Tinubu

Chief Bode George, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against supporting Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress for the 2023 Presidency.

Bode George made this remark in a statement titled, “The jamboree visit to the Villa: My Birthday Offering.”

The former National Port Authority boss warned Buhari against falling to the antics of those who would ignore the issues of Lagos State to engage in a needless scheming in partisan engagement.

Bode-George also condemned the recent visit of some APC chieftains, Chief Bisi Akande, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Dr Yomi Finnih, and Chief Segun Osoba to the State House, Abuja.

The PDP chieftain said: “The visit of Chief Bisi Akande, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, Dr Yomi Finnih, and Chief Segun Osoba to the seat of power in Abuja is needless, unnecessary, veiled in some poorly hidden agenda that is woven in apparently self-serving ulterior personalised desperation.

“It is easy to discern that the visit is stripped of any patriotic progression, lacking in balanced national leadership, voided of a spirit of sacrifice and developmental vision. The very absence of Bola Tinubu from the jamboree screams to high heavens that the meeting itself is a covert placatory softening of the ground for Tinubu himself. I am pretty certain that in his very absence, Tinubu occupies the centrality of the discussion.

“I will advise Baba Akande who governed Osun State with principled, incorruptible leadership to kindly help us drop off Bola Tinubu at Iragbiji as he makes his way back to Ila-Orangun, rather than engaging in fruitless pleading sessions for a man who is fixated on a warped pipe-dream about governing Nigeria. He should pay restitution for the egregious stripping of the Lagosian coffers.”
