Presidency Knocks Lawyer For Granting Interviews In Certificate Suit

Muhammadu Buhari-Certificate

The Presidency on Sunday chided a private lawyer, Mr. Nnamdi Nwokocha, for attempting to prejudice public opinion against President Muhammadu Buhari over his alleged lack of secondary school certificate by declaring the president guilty on the pages of newspapers.

Reacting to Nwokocha’s press interviews, the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said it was unfair for a lawyer, who is a litigant to a case in court, to go out of his way to hijack the power of a Judge by declaring Mr. Buhari guilty of what he is accused of.

Malam Shehu pointed out that newspaper pages are not alternative courts where a lawyer can declare anybody guilty of anything when the court has not formally given a definitive judgment on an issue before it.

“The two-pages interview splashed on pages 56-57 of ThisDay edition of Saturday June 11th breaches a lawyer’s ethical code and we hope that the court and the Bar Association will take notice of this”, he said.
The presidential spokesman stressed that any lawyer that sincerely believes in judicial process and the rights of other parties to a case would not have engaged in the inappropriate and unprofessional practice of trial by media, especially a situation where the litigant openly declared Buhari guilty when the court didn’t make that declaration.

He noted that gag orders emerged in the United States on account of lawyers’ inappropriate conduct on trying and convicting people on the pages of newspapers or the court of public opinion.
Mr. Shehu warned that free speech is not synonymous with recklessness and wanton abuse of the rights of other parties to a case in court.

“The litigant’s unabashed claim that he was a card-carrying member of the opposition PDP which lost power in the last election clearly indicates a scheme that seeks power by circumventing the democratic process of elections”, he said.
The presidential aide further warned that Mr. Nwokocha fails to stop his unfair and professionally inappropriate abuse of free speech, President Buhari’s competent team of lawyers will seek the instrumentality of the law in dealing with his unethical actions.
Shehu said that no one should be a litigant and be a Judge at the same time.

Focus On Reducing Poverty, Not 2023 Elections – Peter Obi

Peter Obi

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has called on his fellow politicians to put issues of 2023 aside and focus on how to rescue the country from the current economic crisis.

Obi said that solving the economic problems of Nigeria was more important than political permutations geared towards the next general elections.

He expressed that the next election has no impact on people’s current livelihoods.

Obi also blamed President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration for not adequately preparing Nigerians for the impact of COVID-19, stating the monies borrowed by this government were not properly put to use.

“Every other country is discussing the recession and how to pull their people out of poverty.

“So what we should do now is to concentrate on the monetary and fiscal policies to start pulling people out of poverty,” Obi said.

Recession: Nigeria Is Broke, Can’t Afford 2021 Budget – Atiku

Atiku Abubakar

Former Vice-President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar has expressed that the Federal Government should reconsider the 2021 budget owing to the recession.

Nigeria officially entered into its worst economic recession in 33 years after the nation recorded a GDP contraction of 3.62 percent in the third quarter of 2020.

He stated that Nigeria is broke and cannot afford the luxurious items in the N13.08 trillion budget proposal.

Atiku in a Twitter thread on Sunday stated that COVID-19 only complicated an existing economic problem.

Atiu went on to express that had President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration listened to advice, the recession could have been avoided.

“We could have avoided this fate by a disciplined and prudent management of our economy.”

“This could have been avoided had this administration taken heed to the patriotic counsel given by myself and other well-meaning Nigerians on cutting the cost of governance, saving for a rainy day, and avoiding profligate borrowing,” Atiku said.

He further said that now is not the time to trade blames but to focus on ways to manage the situation and called on Buhari’s government to “swallow its pride, and accept its limitations, so that they can open their minds to ideas, without caring who the messenger is.”

I Won’t Join Political Enemies To Shoot Down Tinubu – Fayose

Ayo Fayose

Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayodele Fayose has described Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the national leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as one of the greatest builders of men in Yoruba land and Nigeria at large.

The chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) said this in Ado Ekiti on Saturday while speaking with journalists as part of the events commemorating his 60th birthday.

Fayose stated that Tinubu has paid his due politically, hence he vowed not to join political enemies of the former Lagos State Governor to shoot him down.

“I am not championing the course of Tinubu, I am not in the position to do that, but there is no denying the fact that Tinubu is a prominent Yoruba leader, whether in APC or in PDP. There is no gainsaying that fact. Fayose is a prominent son of Yoruba nation. Governors Nyesom Wike, Ifeanyi Okowa, Okezie Ikpeazu, are prominent sons of southern Nigeria.

“What I am trying to say is that we can’t hide their identities and goodwill for political reasons. We can’t deny their contributions. Other leaders from the North like Ahmadu Bello Sardauna, they made different impacts not necessarily like Awolowo. So, Tinubu has paid his dues. I have paid my dues, Okowa has paid his dues, Wike has paid his dues, we need to acknowledge them.

Fayose also insisted that he won’t dump PDP despite the crisis rocking the south-west caucus of the party.
