Did Arsenal Botch Jamie Vardy’s Transfer?

After much speculations and hassle, striker Jamie Vardy has decided to remain at his present club, Leicester City, as Information Nigeria reported.

Arsenal fans are understandably furious at the snub, after the North London club reportedly activated his release clause in early June.

However, Vardy’s miss is more of an opportunistic approach by Arsenal over real seriousness.

First, it is worth noting that Jamie Vardy is a truly exceptional player. His scintillating goals for Leicester last season helped the Foxes in securing an unlikely Premier League title. A direct goal poacher, sandwiched with immense pace and awareness.

He was seen, apparently, as the missing piece in Arsenal’s jigsaw- the club never fully replaced the ever glazing Thierry Henry and Vardy’s attributes spoke volumes.

So it was good news for Arsenal fans when the club activated Vardy’s £20 million contract clause with the hope of luring the player to North London.

However, with Vardy turning 30 next year, Arsenal’s strict contract policy was always going to be the debacle.

Arsenal don’t give contracts of more than 2 years to players over 30; Vardy wanted four years or more.

So it was obviously the case of Arsenal saying “Take the deal we offered (2 years) you or you better stay at Leicester.” And the reigning English Champions responded with a lucrative four-year contract with add-ons. Vardy signed.

Arsenal will now turn their attention to Gonzalo Higuain to bolster their attacking options next season.
