A 26 -year – old man Ikenna John is busy telling policemen attached to the Special Anti- Robbery Squad ( SARS) Ikeja, Lagos State police Command how his “first” robbery operation led to his arrest. According to the police, John and his gang had gone on a robbery operation in a supermarket at the Ilupeju area of Lagos State where they allegedly broke into the supermarket and carted away valuables including expensive wrist watches, men’s wears , and handsets .
The gang would have successfully made away with thier loot but a team of policemen from the Ilupeju police station got wind of the burglary and gave the suspects a hot chase. The policemen arrested one of the suspects while others escaped. Narrating how he was arrested, John who claimed it was his first robbery operation said his friend lured him to join the gang.
He said “ I live at Ajegunle area of Lagos with my friend Godwin. One day , we went to the drinking joint and Godwin told me that he can get us quick money if I follow him somewhere. Godwin planned the operation and told me that he got to know about the supermarket because his girlfriend works there. He told me that the girlfriend had given him information how to enter the supermarket and leave without police arresting us. I believed him and went with him.
True to what he said, we gained entry into the supermarket without any hindrance. Godwin and I are the two burglars. It is not true that we are many. Godwin started packing the wrist watches and I joined him. All of a sudden, we heard police telling us to surrender. I tried to escape but the police said they will shoot. At that point, I told Godwin we should escape together but he beckoned on me to take the left wing while he escaped through the right wing of the supermarket.
Unknown to me, Godwin had set me up to be arrested because the wing he told me to escape was surrounded by police while he had a free route to escape. I ran into the police men and I was arrested while Godwin escaped . I feel bad and regrets going for the operation. It was my first time but Godwin set me up. If he had not told me to run towards that way,the police would not have arrested me “ The Lagos State Commissioner of police, Mr Fatia Owoseni stated that the suspect was arrested in the act.
He said “ Our vigilant policemen got wind of the burglary while it was going on early in the morning and they swooped into action. They arrested the suspect while others escaped. We are on the trail of the fleeing suspects and they will be arrested soon” The police recovered wrist watches, clothes, hammer, axe and other valuables from the suspect.
