Those Opposing Sheriff’s Emergence As PDP Chairman Are Politically Irrelevant – Fayose

Ayo Fayose-Ali Modu-Sheriff

Governor Ayodele Fayose has taken a swipe at members of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, opposing the appointment of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff as national chairman of the party, saying most of them are not politically relevant.

Although the tension that was generated as a result of the emergence of the former Borno governor as PDP chairman has reduced, former ministers from 1999-2015, who are still members of the party, have vowed not to recognize Mr. Sheriff’s leadership.

Speaking with reporters in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Tuesday, Mr. Fayose, who was one of the governors that played a key role in the appointment of Mr. Sheriff, while declaring his support for the newly-appointed chairman, said those still opposed to the current reality could not win 10% of votes in their states during the last general elections.

Declaring that his support of the former Borno governor as PDP chair was not for pecuniary gains, the Ekiti governor advised those calling for his (Sheriff’s) resignation to channel their energy into rebuilding the party.

His words: “As a governor, he can’t give me money. I’m not looking for a favour, I don’t need him to do what I have to do in my state. But most of the people clamouring, particularly in the north today, I want to say that none of them won 10 percent in their state”.

“What are they bringing to the table to continue with this argument? As who? What is their relevance at home? But as a leader, I still have to appeal to them. They should please allow the dust to settle and channel this energy against Ali Modu Sheriff chairmanship into rebuilding the party”, Gov. Fayose pleaded.
