2016 Budget: Presidency To Spend N4b On Cars, N446m On Food-Related Expenses

Buhari-BudgetGoing by the breakdown of the 2016 budget, the Presidency has proposed to spend N3.6 billion for the purchase of cars and another N189 million to change tyres for some vehicles in the presidential garage. The number of cars is not specified.

These figures are part of the N39 billion proposed in the 2016 budget for the Presidency, compared to N24.4 billion in the outgoing year.

The expenditure on tyres is for the bulletproof and plain Mercedes Benz cars being used in the Presidency. Others are Toyota cars, trucks, Land Cruiser Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), Prado SUVs, Hilux pick-up vans, Peugeot 607 and 406 cars, ambulances and others categorized as “utility and operational vehicles”.

President Muhammadu Buhari also in the next fiscal year, is proposing a N1,415,706,197 expenditure for his local and international travels and transportation, as against the sum of N944,672,109 spent in 2015 by him and his predecessor, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, on travels and transportation.

A further breakdown of the 2016 budget for the Presidency indicate that in place of the N24. 6 million voted for Wildlife Conservation, including the purchase of exotic animals last year, N326m is allocated for the same purpose next year.

A breakdown of the 2016 budget for the Presidency includes: general renovation of the Guest House (N387m); complete furnishing of the Guest House (N45m); purchase of computers (27.5m) and construction and provision of recreational facilities (764m).

Recreational materials totaling N12m are to be procured.

Other expenditures on the Presidency’s vehicles include N39.8m for the purchase of an unspecified number of 200 amps, 100 amps and 60 amps Mercedes Benz batteries for bulletproof vehicles.

Also N30m is to be expended on the purchase of tool boxes, car jacks, and diagnostic machines for the Presidency’s bulletproof cars while the purchase of C-Caution triangles, fire-extinguishers and cables is to cost N27m.

The Presidency, however, proposed a reduction of the feeding cost for the first and second families in 2016.

The budget breakdown indicate the sum of N445.5 million was allocated for all meal-related expenses, a reduction from N542.86 million spent by Mr. Jonathan in 2014, and the N526.17 million spent in 2015.

The sum covers the state house headquarters, Offices of the President and Vice President.

Details of the proposed budget show that the president would spend N114.97 million on food stuff/catering materials supplies, as against N16.68 million by his deputy during the year.

The vice president would also spend N7.55 million on refreshment & meals, and N2.49 million on cooking gas/fuel costs.

The State House Headquarters will spend N102.94 million on food stuff/catering materials supplies; N104.744 million on refreshment/meals; N89.17 million on purchase of canteen/kitchen equipment and N6.95 million on cooking gas/fuel cost.

It would be recalled that meal-related expenses of the Presidency became a subject of interest in 2012 when it was revealed that Mr. Jonathan and then Vice President Namadi Sambo proposed to spend N993 million for refreshments, catering services and purchase of kitchen equipment.

The amount was however, revised downwards by N147 million following public upheaval.

  1. From the on look of things on how Buhari APC led government wants to spending money unnecessarily, most Nigerians have beinginning to suspect inner games in this government. How are we sure they re not mama guying the public about the poor state of the economy just to manipulate us believe their lies? Check out the millions and billions to spend on none essential things while civil servants are been owned and the state governments crying foul not being able to pay common 18 thousands naria monthly to civil servants. Salary that is not even up to 100 US DOLLARS. What a BIG shame to a Giant of Africa indeed. Where all the money gone?
