Wolves Close in on Glo NPFL Top Spot as Enyimba, Sunshine Drop Points

Glo Premier League League title contenders Enyimba FC and Sunshine Stars suffered defeats away to Giwa FC and Shooting Stars on Sunday in a Week 28 fixture.

Warri Wolves moved up second after playing out a 1-1 draw away to Nasarawa United.

The coach Paul Aigbogun side have now leapfrogged Sunshine Stars, who suffered a 2-1 defeat to 3SC in Ibadan.

Cletus Itodo had opened scoring for Shooting Stars before Sunshine Stars were reduced to ten men, as defender Stephen Eze received his marching order for handling the ball in the penalty area on 30 minutes.

Goalkeeper David Ariyo saved Wasiu Jimoh’s spot-kick to keep the Akure Gunners in contention.

Poor defending by the hosts allowed Okiki Afolabi to equalise for Sunshine six minutes to the break.

The visitors got all their men behind the ball in the second half while it began chucking it down at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

Chukwude Stephen doubled the hosts’ advantage from a controversial penalty to inflict a sixth defeat of the season on Sunshine Stars.

Charles Henlong was the scorer of the match-winner at the Rwang Pam Stadium as Giwa FC defeated leaders Enyimba. The Jos Elephant skipper’s 72nd-minute penalty separated both side after Emma Anyanwu was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box.

Flying Eagles goalkeeper, Joshua zen ahold, started the match in absence of Femi Thomas, who is on international duty with the Super Eagles.

Enyimba remain on top of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) on 52 points, four points ahead of second-placed Warri Wolves.

Wolves trailed Nasarawa United for 79 minutes courtesy of Esosa Igbinoba strike – his 11th strike of the season. Michael Egbeta salvaged a draw for the Seasiders, who now have 48 points from 28 matches.
