Sunshine Stars Leapfrog Enyimba after Sharks Win

Sunshine Stars rebounded back on top of the Glo Premier League standings on Thursday after their 2-0 win at home to Sharks FC in a Week 21 fixture.

Prince Aggreh’s tenth-minute opener set the tone for another sweet climax in front of a crowded Akure Township stadium, as Tunde Adeniji completed scores for the hosts on 68 minutes to take the Akure Gunners’ point haul to 39; a point above Enyimba FC who drew 2-2 at Akwa United on Wednesday.

Aggreh rampaged Sharks defense throughout the proceedings and nearly doubled his tally few minutes after opening scores but was halted by the linesman’s flag.

Dele Olorundare fluffed a glaring opportunity on 25 minutes and Sharks were lucky to have cleared a goal-mouth melee six minutes after the half-hour mark with a handful of Sunshine defender waiting to pounce.

Aggreh smashed his effort against the woodwork moments later as the half ended without any clear opening by the visitors.

Sharks goalie Henry Ayodele made way for his understudy in the 63rd minute, a couple of minutes after keeping out Aggreh’s shot.

But his replacement had barely settled into the game when Adeniji grabbed Sunshine’s second.

Adeniji also came close to doubling his tally in injury time, but missed from close range.

Teenage striker Alloy Browne struck a debut goal as Enyimba salvaged a solitary point away to Akwa United at the Nest of Champions stadium on Wednesday.

Aniekpeno Udoh lobbed a poor Enyimba clearance into the net to place Akwa on ascendancy in the third minute, but former Akwa striker Musa Najere leveled for the Peoples Elephants in the 34th minute. Najere came off injured at half time.

United pulled ahead before the half-hour mark when Aniekan Ekpe converted his penalty after Enyimba skipper Chinedu Udoji impeded Udoh in the goal area.

Browne came off the bench to settle a 2-2 draw with a delightful finish, as Enyimba were afforded a 24 hour berth at the summit of the standings prior to Sunshine’s win.

The Aba club are now second with 38 points from 21 matches.
