South Sudan Gain Full IOC Recognition & Will Compete in Rio 2016

South Sudan have become the 206th member of the Olympic Movement after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved their full inclusion.

The African Republic are the youngest nation in the world following their independent in 2011.

The IOC’s declaration of full recognition of the National Olympic Committee of South Sudan was made on Day 2 of the governing body’s ongoing Session in Kualar Lumpur, Malaysia.

IOC president Thomas Bach wished the country “bright future,” saying: “This will put your nation on the world map. We will stand by your side.”

A south Sudanese marathon runner, Guor Marial, did participate at London 2012 Summer Games under the Olympic flag as South Sudan was not yet confirmed as an IOC member.

South Sudanese football federation are already member association of Fifa with their men’s national team due to host Mauritania in a first round qualifying match for the 2018 World Cup, which is scheduled for between October 5 and 13.
