A former Governor of Anambra State in the defunct Third Republic, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, has said President Muhammadu Buhari’s appointment of Dr. Emmanuel Ibe Kachikwu as Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, was not enough to assuage the South-East.
The new NNPC boss is from the Igbo-speaking part of Delta State.
Reacting to reports that Buhari’s appointment of Kachikwu has corrected the alleged marginalization of the Igbos under the present administration, Ezeife insisted that the appointment did not undo the alleged lopsidedness of the president’s appointments so far.
“It is not atonement for the many neglects and insults that have happened with the National Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and other agencies. How would a President appoint people into key positions in Nigeria, yet none of them is Igbo? What kind of thing is that?
“On merit, we have the best people in Nigeria and that is not boasting. On motivation, it is the same thing. If Buhari wants to ignore federal character, we are not begging him for any appointment.
“And it is good for us to know where we belong and make appropriate adjustments. It is not a matter of whether Nigeria appreciates us or not. If they think we have done enough and we should go, there is more where what we brought to Nigeria came from. It came from God and we are not going to throw it away. If we go away, we leave with it. We like Nigeria, but one cannot insult and treat a group as if they don’t exist”, the ex-governor said in an interview with SUNDAY PUNCH.
Ezeife described as unfortunate, the ethnic segregation in the country, pointing out that if a person from one region disagrees with another, there should be a less vindictive way of expressing it.
He also lamented the development in the House of Representatives, where every region except the South-East got a principal position.
“I have found that only a very insignificant minority of the Igbo people are saying that they have packed all their eggs in one basket; voting or no voting for any person has not been of consequence to our people. They went for elections and voted as they should and they are proud of it; they can repeat same tomorrow”, he added.

National Broadcast: PDP Slams Buhari Over ‘Disappointing, Empty’ Speech – PDP
Recall that Buhari in his speech called for an end to the protest, adding that his government had already accepted and started implementing demands of the protesters.
He, however, failed to acknowledge the shooting of protesters by soldiers of the Nigerian Army at the Lekki Toll Gate on Tuesday night.
Reacting in a statement on Thursday night by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbodinyan, the PDP said Buhari’s address was depressing and failed empathy test.
The party appealed to Nigerians, particularly the youth, to remain calm and allow a return to normal life in the collective quest for peaceful co-existence in the overall interest of the nation.
PDP Asks Buhari To Stop Killing Of #EndSARS Protesters Across Nigeria
This was contained in a statement titled “EndSARS- Lekki Massacre,” signed by the PDP National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, late on Tuesday.
Ologbodiyan said, “The Peoples Democratic Party, condemns in very strong terms, the killing of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos as well as other parts of our country.
“It is shocking that security agents and, in some cases, thugs, were reportedly deployed to end the lives of promising Nigerians. This, to say the least, is saddening.
“Those responsible for the heinous murder of the innocent and harmless Nigerians must account for their nefarious acts.
“The PDP calls on President Muhammadu Buhari to immediately direct an end to these wanton killings across our nation.
