Court Jails Bricklayer For 12 Years For Defiling Teenager

Justice Sedoten Ogunsanya of the Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja yesterday sentenced a 33-year-old bricklayer, Taoreed Oseni, to 12 years imprisonment for raping an 18-year-old hawker at a public toilet.

NO-to-RAPE

Justice Ogunsanya handed down the verdict after she found Oseni guilty of one-count charge of rape brought against him by the state government.

According to the judge, the sentence, which is without an option of fine, will take effect from August 2, 2012 when the convict was arrested and detained by the police.

The prosecution team, led by the state counsel, Adebayo Haroun, had informed the court during the trial that the convict committed the offence sometime in July 2012 at a public toilet at the Mafoluku Area of Oshodi, Lagos.

Haroun also told the court that the convict lured the victim to the back of the public toilet by telling her that her friend wanted to see her.

He said, “When she got to the back of the toilet, the convict overpowered her by breaking a bottle on her head.

“The convict then forcefully had carnal knowledge of the victim despite her plea and cry for help”.

According to the lawyer, the offence was contrary to the law and punishable under Section 258 (1) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2011.
