Nigeria’s military chiefs say they will retain check points they consider essential in dealing with insecurity in the country.
The decision came following a meeting by the security chiefs to discuss the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari on the removal of check points nationwide.
President Buhari had on Monday ordered the Chief of Defence Staff and the Inspector- General of police to dismantle all military check points across Nigeria.
Premium Times quoted a source briefed about the outcome of the meeting to have said the service chiefs argued that the president did not say that “all” road blocks be dismantled, but that non-essential ones which have contributed to traffic congestion, be removed.
Several checkpoints have been cleared in the last 24 hours in line with the president’s directive.
