Flooding has in the past led to the loss of property worth millions of naira in Lagos. It can happen again if the people of the state fail to cooperate with the government to forestall a recurrence during this raining season.

In view of this, the Lagos State government Thursday warned against indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drains across the state, which has been fingered as responsible for the persistent flash flooding experienced by the people.

Permanent Secretary of the state office of Drainage services, Mr. Ayodeji Adenekan said this after inspecting some drainage channels and canals in Agege Local Government, Palmgrove axis and others.

According to Adenekan, residents have turned the drains into their dump site. “The canals across the state are filled with disposable cans and other solid refuse. They were thrown from different locations.”

“We have started work on the removal of the waste (during-rainy season). We have deployed different officers manning different locations in the state and their responsibility is to ensure that the drains are clean. It is an enormous work,” he said.
