Extradition Saga: Kashamu Was Arrested, Tried In UK Court – Nigerian Police

Buruji KashamuThe Nigeria Police has clarified a report in a national daily on Thursday, June 18, 2015 concerning the extradition troubles of the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Prince Buruji Kashamu.

Mr. Kashamu and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), are locked in a legal battle over the latter’s attempt to extradite to the United States of America, USA, to answer drug-related charges.

In a report published yesterday by LEADERSHIP, the newspaper suggested that the embattled senator was in the clear following a request by the Nigeria Police to sought relevant clarifications from the British High Commission, which purportedly responded that Mr. Kashamu had no case to answer.

Reacting to the report, the Force Public Relations Officer, CP Emmanuel Ojukwu in a statement issued on Thursday, confirmed that the Nigeria Police had received a letter in April from Kashamu’s attorneys concerning the status of his legal battles in the United Kingdom and United States, following which it wrote a letter to the British High Commission.

“The authority of the British High Commission confirmed on 27th April, 2015, through a letter to the Inspector-General of Police, that Prince Buruji Kashamu was indeed arrested and tried in the United Kingdom criminal court, but that the court was not satisfied that Prince Kashamu had a case to answer.

“However, for the avoidance of doubt, the British High Commission letter in question did not derogate from the extradition request by the US authority pending with relevant departments and agencies of government in Nigeria”, Mr. Ojukwu stated.
