Unpaid Salaries: Abia Gov Slashes Own Salary, Travel Allowance By Half

Okezie IkpeazuGovernor of Abia State, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, has slashed his salary and traveling allowances by half until the state government clears the backlog of salaries and allowances it is owing workers.

He made the announcement today at the Government House, Umuahia, during the swearing-in of the state new Head of Service, Dr. Vivian Uma.

The governor, who expressed sadness that workers in the state were being owed, promised to do everything within his power to ensure that their salaries and allowances for the last three months are systematically cleared.

Dr. Ikpeazu called on other appointees, who can, to follow his example and stressed that there was need to cut down on the cost of governance.

While congratulating the new Head of Service on her appointment, which he described as a milestone, the governor pointed out that it was part of his government’s desire to revive the civil service.

He said he expects the Abia civil service to be more proactive to the challenges ahead.

Gov. Ikpeazu also taked the new HoS on exploring innovative ways to doing things especially in terms of shoring up the IGR of the state.

In her acceptance speech, Dr. Uma promised to bring positive transformation to the civil service as discipline and sound ethical conduct will be enthroned into the service for greater service delivery.

She also thanked the Governor for appointing her and promised to be loyal and supportive of his administration.
