Ghana Midfielder Andre Ayew Wins Marc-Vivien Foe Award

Ghana and Olympique Marseille midfielder Andre Ayew has won the Marc-Vivien Foe Trophy for the best African footballer in the French Ligue 1.

Ayew, 25, beat Cote d’Ivoire and St-Etienne’s Max-Alain Gradel and Tunisian Aymen Abdenour of Monaco to the prize.

He joined Marseille in 2007, but was loaned out to L’Orient and then Arles-Avignon in the early days of his career before his emergence as a key figure at the Stade Velodrome.

Ayew, who has 62 caps for Ghana, has as well notched up ten goals in 17 appearances for Marseille this season, but appears on his way out of Marseille, having stated he is unlikely to stay at the club next season.

Marseille’s president had previously said they could not afford to keep the forward.

“The president has spoken, therefore, things have been said more or less. We know I’m going to leave the club. This is a page that will turn,” Ayew affirmed.

“There are many things behind it. We tried to find solutions that I stay but for the club and me it was a bit complicated, whether in sport or financial aspects.

“I expected more, I wanted the club to have a competitive team next year to play the title and it is not insured. And the club could not offer me the same wage.”
