French Open: Berdych, Sharapova, Suarez-Navarro Advance

Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych secured his 10 win so far in the clay season with a 6-0 7-5 6-3 defeat of Japan’s Yushihito Nishioka on Court Suzanne-Lenglen on Day 2.

The No. 4 seed cruised through the first round, converting three of four break points opportunities and taking 68% of points while on the receiving end on his track to closing out a bagel in 27 minutes.

Nishioka, 19, ensured there was no easy ride for Berdych in the second set, breaking serves as much as the 29-year-old but lacking the expertise to consolidate for points.

The 2010 semi-finalist eventually closed out victory after 1 hour and 46 minutes, when his younger opponents sent a backhand wide. He will facebCzech’s Radek Stepanek in round 2.

Women’s second seed Maria Sharapova began her title defense with a 6-2 6-4 win over Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi at Court Philippe-Chatrier later on Monday.

The two-time champion raked in 17 winners and converted 5 out of 14 break points on her way to victory in one hour and 25 minutes.

The Russian will face compatriot Vitalia Diatchenko in the second round. Diatchenko saw off Switzerland’s Stafanie Vogele 6-4 3-6 2-6.

No 12-ranked Gael Simons topped the battle of two Frenchmen against Lucas Pouille, fighting back from losing the opening set to securing a 6-3 1-6 2-6 4-6 win at the Philippe-Chatrier.

Teymuraz Gabashvilli provided Men’s Singles upset of Day 2 with a 6-3 7-6 (11-9) 6-3 success against 11th-seed Spaniard Feliciano Lopez. Lopez, 33, has now suffered his tenth defeat in the first round at Roland Garros.

Fabio Fognini is through to the second round for a third straight year after a 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over Tatsuma Ito.

Frenchwoman Alize Cornet secured her first career win over Italy’s Roberta Vinci 4-6 6-4 6-1 in a tensely contested three-setter.

Poland’s Paula Kania rallied to see off Germany’s Mona Berthel, as 11th-seed German Angelique Kerber demolished world No. 78 Timea Babos 6-0 6-1.

Eighth seed Carla Suarez-Navarro saw off Romanian Monica Niculescu 6-2 6-2 to take her WTA lead for most main draw wins this season to 32.

Another upset, this time in the Women’s Singles, saw Annicka Beck of Germany account for Polish 14th-seed Agnieszka Radwanska 2-6 6-3 1-6 to equal her best run in Paris from 2013.
