Why Buhari Should Not Emerge Winner Of The Presidential Elections – Former US Envoy

As Nigerians get ready to head to the polls next week Saturday, a former spokesman for four United States Ambassadors to the United Nations, Richard Grenell has given his opinion on why Muhammadu Buhari should not emerge winner of the presidential election.

Muhammadu Buhari

According to Grenell, it would be a disaster for the entire African continent if Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) wins the presidential elections scheduled for March 28, Punch reports.

This was disclosed in a piece titled: Nigeria on the brink, and which was published in the Washington Times, a US based publication, of Thursday, March 19, 2015.

Grenell noted that the former military Head of state has been working tirelessly to enthrone Sharia law across the country, and this would pose a major challenge to the fight against terrorism in Nigeria and the continent at large.

The former US envoy said: “Western foreign policy observers pre-occupied with the rise of ISIS in the Middle East should wake up to the reality unfolding in Nigeria. Opposition candidate General Buhari wants Sharia law throughout Nigeria. In fact, he wants it everywhere.

“Is this an indication that Buhari supports violence because the end goal of the terrorist attacks throughout Nigeria and Africa is an Islamic state? It is a legitimate question that should be asked by leaders of the Obama administration.

“Boko Haram has pledged its allegiance and support to ISIS. The Northern Nigerian based Islamic terrorist group wants Sharia law throughout the country and beyond. They are also actively terrorising Chad, Niger and Cameroon with their goal of an Islamic state.

Buhari has also spoken sympathetically about members of the terrorist group Boko Haram, has cautioned against a rush to judgement on its members and has personally been selected by the terrorist group to lead its negotiations with the Government of Nigeria.

“Buhari’s election as Nigeria’s head of state would be a disaster for Africa. It would also signal trouble for the West’s fight against ISIS and terrorism throughout the Middle East.”

He added that in recent weeks, President Goodluck Jonathan, Buhari’s main rival had made commendable efforts to rout the Boko Haram set from some communities and therefore deserves the support of the Barack Obama led United States administration and the rest of the world.

The Nigerian economy has been growing faster than South Africa’s. Imagine what Nigeria could do for Africa if it was also free of Boko Haram’s violence. The Obama Administration should be doing more to ensure Africa’s most populous country doesn’t slip away.

“Islamic radicals have Africa on their target list and young Nigerians are reported to be interested in ISIS’ messages. Nigeria is at a tipping point. The West, and specifically the Obama Administration, needs to wake up to the growing problem,” Grenell said.

There has been concerns that the APC presidential candidate will Islamise Nigeria if he he is elected as President of the country. Buhari has however, on countless occasion, said he was not a religious fundamentalist or extremist as his opponents had alleged.

Speaking recently through the vice presidential candidate of the APC, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, at an inter-faith engagement in Kaduna, Buhari said:“I would like to solemnly declare that in spite of what detractors say, I am not a religious fanatic of any sort and I have never been.

  1. This is what majority if us know already, but it is like APC as a party is employing the use of hypnotism and diabolism to canvas for votes. This is the only reason why people will believe that a semi illiterate sick old coupist Buhari is the person that will solve the mirade of problems facing Nigeria which was caused by 28 years of military government in Nigeria. Well God is in charge. I hope some gullible and myopic youths who listen to lies, deceits and negative propaganda from APC.

  2. Grenell you should know that power and authority belongs to God and only him can decide to whom he will give power and if he likes he can give it to Buhari, and to what you said about Buhari for islamising Nigeria this is a very big liar that means you are illiterate about Buhari.

rather than insults we will get answers to these factual
    questions.
    1. Has Buhari apologized to Ben Ogedengbe’s family for killing

    committed it.

    military rule?

    govt?
    5. Has Buhari apologized for raiding Papa Awolowo’s house

  5. ”Jihadi groups killed more than 5,000 people last month, with
Iraq topping the league table of deaths, followed by Nigeria,
    Afghanistan and Syria.
In 664 incidents recorded in November by the BBC World
Service and researched jointly with King’s College London, the
overall death toll was 5,042, or an average of 168 deaths per
day and nearly twice the number of people who were killed in
the 11 September 2001 attacks on America.
After Iraq, Nigeria, Afghanistan and Syria, Yemen was fifth in
the deadly league table, tying with Somalia, with 37 incidents
each”- DORO ADEBENTLEY 11 December, Facebook.
All this and some people still say they want Buhari as
President? A man who said, only last year, that ”an attack on
Boko Haram is an attack on the north”? A man who said, in
2001, that he wants to ”spread sharia throughout the
federation”? A man who said, in 2001, that muslims should
only vote for muslims”? A man who said, in 2001, that ”why
should christians be concerned when muslims cut off their
limbs under sharia”?. A man who said, in 2001, that ”after all
the limbs that are being cut off are muslim ones and not
christian so why should the christians bother about it”?
This is the man that some Nigerians are clamouring for to be
their President? May God open their eyes and protect them
from themselves. May He grant them wisdom and
    discernment.

  6. The problem is not Buhari but the corrupt God fatherism he has entered business with (Almed Bola Tinubu of Lagos state) Buhari has nothing left to offer 21’st century Nigerian youth. Tinubu is using him for his Personal secret agenda.I like their being opposition because part of the money Buhari looted from the oil sector and that of Tinubu has came out for election campaign. Am sure they will fail

  7. To be president of Nigeria is not by force. Buhari should try his luck in other capcities, if he really wants to serve Nigeria. If he does not listen to advice, he may have to try seven times like the legendry toad that wants to jump into a pot of water. Enough of the misconception.

  8. The chicken are finally coming home to roost. Buhari is a disaster waiting to happen and unfortunately ignorant persons are are being victimized into thinking or believing that he will win election or can bring any tangible development to this country. Even the corrupt politicians who think that the best way to divert attention from themselves is to que behind Buhari and shout corruption against others are mistaken. James Ibori funded Yar’Adua’s campaign and even secured himself a cosy office in Aso Rock but in the fullness of time, he moved to serve time in a London jail.
Apart from the empty jargon woven around corruption, Buhari has failed to disclose any concrete plan he seeks to introduce to governance. He kept lamenting that Nigeria Airways and Nigerian Shipping line are no more. Why didn’t he advise Abacha whom he served to stop the sale of our ships and bastardization of our airline?
In 54 years of independence civilian politicians have ruled this country for only 18 years:Balewa for 6 years, Shagari for 4 years, Yar Adua 21/2years and Jonathan 51/2 years. OBJ was smuggled in by the military to steal another 8 years of our democracy and now as the nation seeks to turn a full page of one uninterrupted 8 years of civilian democracy, this giddy extremist coupist comes over with empty propaganda and religious sentiment to set us in a backward movement. God forbid that the black race should suffer the indignity of having Buhari to lead its most forward looking nation. I felt ashamed when a British commentator queried why APC should field a man who neither knows the full meaning of INEC nor that of APC his party during his visit to Chatham House.
