Injured Cheick Tiote Unlikely To Play Again This Season

Ivory Coast international and Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote has underwent a knee surgery in Qatar and is unlikely to play again for the rest of the season.

The midfielder sustained the injury during this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), which ‘Les Elephants’ won, in Equatorial Guinea.

The procedure was carried out on Sunday in the Gulf state, where he is expected to remain during the early part of his rehabilitation.

Magpies head coach John Carver explained: “Communication is not great at the minute so we are trying to get more and more (information), but I think he’ll stay there (Qatar) for a while.

“He’s there because the surgeon who did his operation on his thigh when he was at FC Twente is out there. He’ll have a bit of time there and then come back, but w would say his season is probably over.”
